Spot on Nathan, there is a time and place for it. The safest place for that sort of riding IS the track, but to become acquainted with the bike it is unbeatable. None of the usual hazards of riding on the road to contend with frees your mind to concentrate on the ride and the cornering.

Confidence will only come when your skill level improves with the equipment your are riding, and it's a bum on seat thing, each time you ride the bike you should experiment with it's capabilities without going beyond your comfort zone, remember the bike will most likely do more than you are capable of.

I could ride my SV650 faster than the current R6, but with practice and seat time the R6 will be far superior to the SV. So don't blame yourself for not getting the conidence straight away, it will take time, and when it hits you, it will feel like the bike is on rails.

Thanks guys. I really do appreciate the advice and there seems to be a common thread - practice. I sat back and thought about how much and the type of riding i do and suprise suprise i do bucket loads, its mostly straight line and constant speed.......like Im gunna learn a real lot from that.
Looks like I'm gunna have to find me some twisties to pratice on

Oh yeah and David I've had the wfd for about 2 months and certainly is different than the gpx on hell of a lot lighter and the power / torque comes in very differently.

Good point Steve, you have to be comfortable with the bike. Also do things like check that tyre pressures are right and the tyres aren't too flat (worn) in the middle from all the straight line stuff you have been doing, make for a crappy transition as you begin to lean into a corner.

There's a good article in the current Two Wheels mag on improving your bike on the cheap. Checking things like suspension sag is quite important to getting the bike working right.

When I get a new bike I also do things like adjust the levers to where they feel more comfortable. In my case I like to spin them down a bit so that when I use the brake and clutch the top of my hands are in line with my arms (hope that makes sense, bit hard to explain as I just found out) see if this explains it better Quicktip! - Adjusting the brake and clutch lever angle and reach « Survival Skills Rider Training

Just some more thoughts anyway.
