Hi tech stuff is always fickle and erratic!

Have you checked for knots, rusty tins, frayed ends, bend string, wrong colour or birds sitting on the string? Twisted or woven? Maybe a new calibration to the key of 'G' needs to be performed!
Maybe you're just too highly strung!

You might have to get a tech help from your local sailing school!

I tried satellite briefly, then took Tel$tra to the ombudsman over their deceipt....$375+ a month

Needless to say, they backed down real quick

Our phone is the furthest from the exchange, even though broadband is available on the exchange, the shitty lines to us will never be upgraded so it isn't an option.

I'm going to look into ADSL though, see how much $$ that will sting me

There was subsidised two way satelite once, I was using it in tas...
cost $79 a month. Was reasonably fast, but masses of latency.
