A question to all the mechanical gurus populating this site ![]() I have noticed over the last few days that there appears to be oil leaking from the top of the forks. Having very few mechanical skills, well some but not with bikes, is this a fix that I can perform or would I be better off taking it to a shop. If its better to send it to a shop any referrals would be good, either in the city/carlton area or out north west melb way Appreciate any advice |

You can do them yourself Stu, but as oyu have few mechanical skills, I would suggest taking the forks off the bike, taking them to a shop and it should cost you around the $100 mark |

Sounds like fork seals. The buggers occassionally need replacing as they are rubber and perish. The seals don't cost much but the forks need to come out to do it. Fork oil needs to be changed at the same time so it will freshen up the front end for ya.

Cheers guys I might give you a call tomorrow Pete, I work in carlton so I'm not far from Fitzroy to drop off. Noticed them leaking after a near miss on Monday which required heavy braking that lifted the back wheel in the air and smacked the family jewels fair into the tank pulled over to catch my breath so to speak and see if I broke anything on both me and the bike and noticed the leak then so not sure how long they have been leaking.

If its a big leak make sure oil hasnt contaminated the brake pads and discs. Feel free to swing by and I'll take a quick look to tell you whats wrong with the bike. Give me a ring first before you turn up just incase Im out picking up spare parts.

Well decided I dont have the tools or the knowledge to do it myelf so dropped by Pete the Poms place and he confirmed my fears, basically the forks are forked . Oil is leaking at a fair pace onto the brakes & tyre which is not a good thing. The VFR is now parked in my garage until I get the replacement bits.Anyone got a spare bike laying around they dont need for a few weeks only kidding. Looks like car or public transport for me.Thanks to all for the advice offered and to Pete for the time & help today. Hopefully back on the road in a few weeks. |
