Bah. HTFU you pansies

This winter doesn't seem as cold as last. I was getting into town with the thermometer on one of the buildings saying 0 and 1 degree some mornings, it hasn't gotten below 3 so far this year. Always had feeling in my hands when I get to work.

Let's see what Melbourne's got...

I haven't ridden in the heat yet so don't know what the limit is. It'd depend on the gear I have, if I'll be wearing what I've got right now the limit would probably be 20 degrees

So far I haven't gotten cold on the bike yet and have been out and about when it's under 5 degrees and foggy. My hands copped it a bit in the rain the other day so I bought winter gloves, should be all good now.

Yeah but Nate
Do you have to ride too far during the early mornings or late nights??
Dim riding in from home to the CBD is a good long cold ride, but from your place to the CBD isnt that far to ride, so its not a long exposure to the cold and not at high speeds either.
I know I prefered the Lindisfarne to CBD ride into work over the Tinderbox to CBD

We lived in Darwin before we moved to Melbourne and then Hobart (2 moves in 18 months) we have riden in extremely hot weather and didnt have issue with it , we just packed the camelback with ice and cold water into the little section on our Dririder jackets that is meant for the camelback to go, keeping yourself hydrated is the way too go.

I dont mind riding in the cold and we rode all year round while in Melbourne and in minus temps too from out the North West side, the only Issue I have down here in Hobart is the moss and the frost on the roads.

Kathmandu are currently having a '3 for the price of 1' sale on thermal clothing, so me being a sucker for a sale, I walked out with 4 tops and 2 pairs of pants! Yet to try them out on the bike but they appear to be really good quality, so here's hoping.

During the week I rode from Wang to Melbourne (on the Hume) and I absolutely froze my butt off. I had thermals on under my wet weather gear which was ok but the thermal glove liners were useless. So, I tried to defrost my little frozen fingers on the bike frame with some success - my throttle hand got the raw end however. Heated grips will be my next purchase or sure!

I also find the neck collar to be a bit restrictive but it was absolutely essential.

Still not sure whether I'd rather ride in the heat or the cold...

Actually one more thing. I've recently started commuting to the CBD for work (which has done wonders for my stop/start skills!). I've already bought a mesh jacket for summer which I will wear with BIKE jeans. Never, never, ever wear clothing that is NOT meant for bikes - not matter how hot or how short the ride is! I learnt the hard way after coming off in ordinary jeans. I copped full thickness burns to my chest, hand (glove came off), thigh, knee and hip, including a compound fracture to my knee (to list a few things) - it was on a 40 degree day and only meant to be a 10 min ride. Didn't think I'd need my full leathers but lucky I was smart enough to wear my jacket otherwise it'd be a different story. However it was still a very painful and slow 5 year recovery. Always cover yourself up with the right gear!

P.S. If you want to make a point to someone, I'm only too happy to share the photo's of the injuries...

Ride safe everyone.

How many can you fit in there? A spare pair of mine might need to hitchhike with you on the next Winter ride

Thanks Crusingal. It's taken 5 years for me to muster up the courage and get back in the saddle. I'll never completely heal, but I'm at a point where the injuries (and fear) don't stop me from riding anymore - I love it!
